Tiger Appoints New Caddie, But Does Joe Have What it Takes to Get Him Out of the Woods
Tiger threw the name Joe LaCava in the ring as his new right hand man. Joe LaCava, 47 of Newton, CT, was Fred Couples Caddie for nearly 20 years. His most recent employ was with Dustin Johnson. LaCava started with Johnson just this summer after Couples tour schedule was thinned out for health reasons.
An unnammed source told the washingtonpost.com that LaCava informed Johnson of the decision to join Team Tiger right after the final round of the tour championships.
LaCava may be just what Woods needs. He’s a detail man. He knows every inch of the course and every shot. He accounts for varibles and really steers the game.
Mark Calcavecchia said of LaCava, ”He basically had to lead Fred around the course most of the time. He knows how to take charge.”
Stevie Williams used to do the same thing for Tiger during the golden years.
“I’m excited to be working with Tiger, I contacted Tiger and Mark because this is a unique opportunity to be part of something very special. Tiger and I have been friends for a very long time, and I know what he can do.” LaCava said.
Whether Woods can make the venture profitable for LaCava remains to be seen. Woods is still on a two year victory drought on the Tour. He didn’t qualify for the Fedex Cup Playoffs — he was off for 4 months with injuries.
LaCava will do his first carry for Tiger at the Frys.com Open. October 6-9. Following Frys, Woods will be at the Australian Open and then the Presidents Cup in November.
